What’s New On Netflix January 2018?

Netflix has become an unbelievable source of entertainment for millions of Canadians. For the relatively cheap monthly subscription, users have access to countless films and television shows from various years, various genres and various cinematic tastes.

The only real problem with Netflix is deciding what to watch.

Luckily we’ve got a new feature to let you know what new programs will be debuting this month and which ones are worth checking out.

All Eyez on Me

Directed by Benny Boom

Starring Demetrius Shipp Jr., Danai Gurira, Kat Graham

Telling the story of Tupac Shakur. Born while his mother served a prison sentence, he rose to become one of the most prolific, beloved and celebrated rappers of all time. Chronicling his life and career that was filled with highs and lows, violence, controversy and ended far too early.

The Babadook

Directed by Jennifer Kent

Starring Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Daniel Henshall

A dark, psychological horror film about a widowed mother trying to raise her disturbed son. When the son begins to seeing a mysterious creature lurking about, the mother finds their house haunted by dark forces.

Carol

Directed by Todd Haynes

Starring Cate Blanchette, Rooney Mara, Kyle Chandler

Set in the 1950s, a young aspiring photographer begins a relationship with an older woman which develops in unexpected ways which have massive impacts on their lives.

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Created by Jerry Seinfeld

One of the most successful comedians of all time gives us a unique and delightful take on the talk show. Jerry Seinfeld, lover of comedians and cars combines them along with a caffeine kick as he picks up some of his comedian friends to for a joy ride and discussion of all things silly. Some standout guests include Larry David, Chris Rock, Tina Fey and Steve Martin among many, many others.

A Ghost Story

Directed by David Lowery

Starring Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, McColm Cephas Jr.

After a man dies, he comes back as a ghost to watch over his depressed wife in this tale of grief, moving on and the passing of time.

Kill the Messenger

Directed by Michael Cuesta

Starring Jeremy Renner, Robert Patrick, Jena Sims

Based on the true story on journalist Gary Webb and his pursuit of a story involving the CIA being involved in the smuggling of cocaine. The story put Webb on a national stage where he became a prime target for the CIA.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

Directed by Justin Chadwick

Starring Idris Elba, Naomie Harris, Terry Pheto

The story of Nelson Mandela’s life, one of the world’s most inspiring people. Chronicling his early years of rural life, his confrontation with systemic racism, imprisonment and final election as president of South Africa.

Mr. Holmes

Directed by Bill Condon

Starring Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Hiroyuki Sanada

An aged and retired Sherlock Holmes is dealing with dementia as he looks back on his last case and the memories that still haunts him.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Directed by Joachim Rønning, Espen Sandberg

Starring Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Javier Bardem

Captain Jack Sparrow returns for the fifth and possibly final Pirates movie as he searches for the Trident of Poseidon while being hunted by a ghost from his past and his undead crew.

The Polka King

Starring Jack Black, Jenny Slate, Vanessa Bayer

A comedic take on the bizarre about a popular polka star who found himself in hot water with the authorities for developing a Ponzi scheme involving his fans.
