Colin Quinn: The New York Story
Genre: Comedy
There’s few things better than watching a truly gifted stand-up comedian display their impressive art. Colin Quinn may not be one of the mot renowned comedians or a household name, but the Saturday Night Live alumni has made a solid career as the king of New York’s comedy club scene. He’s rude, grumpy, un-PC and undeniably hilarious.
Eddie the Eagle (2016)
Genre: Sports
Starring Taron Egerton, Hugh Jackman, Christopher Walken
Directed by Dexter Fletcher
Written by Sean Macaulay & Simon Kelton
What makes a great sports movie truly fun is having a likable underdog who is easy to root for. This film is follows that formula to a tee. It’s the true story of a courageous and determined British ski-jumper who, along with his washed-up trainer, defied the odds at the 1988 Winter Olympics.
Green Room (2015)
Genre: Thriller
Starring Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Patrick Stewart
Directed by Jeremy Saulnier
Written by Jeremy Saulnier
Looking for something a little darker and a lot more violent? This small film that largely flew under the radar will be remember in years to come as one of the genre greats. The simple, tense tale follows a punk rock group who takes a gig at a club run by Neo-Nazis and things quickly unravel. It is gruesome and sometimes hard to watch but it’s a surprisingly thrilling film if you can stomach it.
King Arthur (2004)
Genre: Action, Adventure
Starring Clive Owen, Keira Knightley, Ioan Gruffudd
Directed by Antoine Fuqua
Written by David Franzoni
Sometimes it’s fun to turn your brain off for a bit of mindless, swash-buckling fun and this film is nothing if not mindless. A more grounded retelling of the tale of how Arthur became king, this adventure follows the reluctant leader of a band of knights who set-out to fight against the invading Saxons. It’s a demystified look at what has become a bit of a fairy tale and while it’s not high art, it can be a good bit of fun.
