Netflix has become an unbelievable source of entertainment for millions of Canadians. For the relatively cheap monthly subscription, users have access to countless films and television shows from various years, various genres and various cinematic tastes.
The only real problem with Netflix is deciding what to watch.

The Bucket List (2007)

Starring Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Sean Hayes
While the concept of terminal cancer doesn’t sound like a good jumping off point for a light-hearted comedy but this one might surprise you. The story follows two aging men who, while initially at odds, come together as they try to get the most out of what’s left of their lives. It’s nice to see two of the best actors ever sharing the screen together, even if it’s not the most enlightened material. However, the tale of living life to its fullest is a nice story to take in.
Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Directed by Stanley Kubrick
Starring Matthew Modine, Vincent D’Onofrio, R. Lee Ermey
Stanley Kubrick is one of the most celebrated film directors of all time, with such films as The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, and very much included on his lists of classics is this film. One of the auteur’s last films, this is an unique look at Vietnam and how it turned regular men into killers. Split into two distinct halves, the first deals with new recruits going through the hellish experience of boot camp under a brutal drill sergeant. The second follows those young men now thrust into the horrors of war. While the second half might not live up to the brilliance of the first, it’s still a deeply engaging and harsh look at a dark part of history with Kubrick’s signature genius behind the camera.
The Queen (2006)

Starring Helen Mirren, Michael Sheen, James Cromwell
One of the most recognizable people on the planet Earth is Queen Elizabeth II. However, there is still shockingly little that is publicly known about her private life. Therefore, it is instantly fascinating to see such a personal story about the Queen set against such a pivotal era in her reign. Set during the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death, a time when the public somewhat villainized the royal family, this is highly intriguing tale of how she dealt with a very complicated moment. Come for the story, stay for Mirren’s amazing performance.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Genre: Thriller
Directed by M. Night Shyamalan
Starring Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, Toni Collette
What’s better than a good ol’ fashion ghost story. While not everyone does well with scary films, this is an expertly made, quiet horror film that relies more on creepy mood than the tired jump-scares which permeate the genre. Led by a solid performance from Willis and an even better one from young Osment, this story of a child psychiatrist who seeks to help a troubled kid who claims to see dead people has become a modern classic. And even if you know the now famous twist, the film still packs quite a punch.
Young Frankenstein (1974)
Genre: Comedy
Directed by Mel Brooks
Starring Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn
Mel Brooks is responsible for some of the greatest comedies of all time and this comedy gem is perhaps the crowning achievement of his filmography. Telling a twisted and hilarious version of the classic Frankenstein story, with Gene Wilder as the semi-brilliant, semi-crazed scientist who brings to life a simple but kind monster. Filled with classic one-liners, great slapstick humour, and outrageous non-sequiturs, you’ll be laughing from start to finish.
