5 Things To Watch On Netflix Canada (May 2016)

May 2, 2016

Netflix has become an unbelievable source of entertainment for millions of Canadians. For the relatively cheap monthly subscription, users have access to countless films and television shows from various years, various genres and various cinematic tastes.

The only real problem with Netflix is deciding what to watch.

Luckily we’ve got a new feature to let you know what new programs will be debuting this month and which ones are worth checking out.

Let’s take a look at what’s new on Netflix May 2016!

Mud (2012)

Genre: Drama

Starring Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Tye Sheridan.

Written and directed by Jeff Nichols.

While Matthew McConaughey received a lot of praise for his comeback roles in Dallas Buyers Club and True Detective, the lesser-seen Mud may very well be his best film to date. The film revolves around two young children growing up in the South who come across a mysterious fugitive from the law and decide to help him. It is a cross between Stand By Me and a Mark Twain novel, with impressive performances not only from McConaughey but also the two young actors.

Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation (2015)

Genre: Action

Starring: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg.

Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie.

The Mission: Impossible franchise began in 1996, and now, twenty years and 5 films later, it has proven to be one of the strongest franchises of all time. In fact, the series has only improved with age and with this latest entry, they have scored their best yet. Tom Cruise shows no signs of slowing down and dominates in the role of super-spy Ethan Hunt. He and his crack team are trotting the globe to stop a rogue terrorist organization known as The Syndicate. This is the ultimate popcorn film with some fun humour and stunt sequences that will literally take your break away.

Bridge of Spies (2015)

Genre: Courtroom drama

Starring Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan.

Written by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen.

Directed by Steven Spielberg.

Among last year’s Oscar Best Picture nominees, Bridge of Spies was perhaps the least known. While it didn’t receive the public attention of Mad Max or The Revenant, it did garner near universal praise from critics and proved to be a true crowd-pleaser. Just what you’d expect from a film that combines the considerable talents of Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and the Coen Brothers. This Cold War tale tells the story of the highly sensitive and highly improbable deal to trade an American spy for a Soviet spy. It’s a taut and riveting thriller with some serious pedigree.

Bloodline Season 2 (2015-)

Genre: Mystery, TV series

Starring Kyle Chandler, Ben Mendelsohn, Linda Cardellini.

Created by Todd A. Kessler, Glenn Kessler, Daniel Zelman.

One of the great joys of Netflix is their original programs. Totally new shows are presented on the platform a whole season at a time. And so, the return of their series Bloodline has many people exited to binge. The show follows a prominent Florida family, that has more than one dark secret in their past, who are torn apart by a murder mystery at the show’s center. The first season was pretty enthralling with it’s central mystery and the second season promises to delve even deeper. And if you haven’t been able to check out the first season then you can catch up whenever you want.

Cool Runnings (1993)

Genre: Comedy, Sport

Starring John Candy, Leon, Doug E. Doug.

Written by Lynn Siefert, Tommy Swerdlow, Michael Goldberg

Directed by John Turteltaud

It’s not all new films to enjoy on Netflix. Catch up with some classics, like this early 90s comedy gem. Starring legendary Canadian John Candy in the tale of the Jamaican bobsled team who strives for an unlikely gold medal in the winter Olympics. It’s a lighthearted film perfect for a quiet weekend and a nice film to revisit if it’s been a while.
