Netflix has become an unbelievable source of entertainment for millions of Canadians. For the relatively cheap monthly subscription, users have access to countless films and television shows from various years, various genres and various cinematic tastes.
The only real problem with Netflix is deciding what to watch.
Luckily we’ve got a new feature to let you know what new programs will be debuting this month and which ones are worth checking out.
Let’s take a look at what’s new on Netflix July 2016!
National Lampoon’s Animal House
Genre: Comedy
Starring John Belushi, Tim Matheson and Tom Hulce
Directed by Jon Landis
Written by Harold Ramis, Douglas Kenney and Chris Miller
National Lampoon’s name is synonymous comedy and this comedy classic has certainly helped with that reputation. If you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing this 1978 film, don’t go in expecting high art. The “plot” (if you can say there is a plot) deals with a rowdy, debaucherous university fraternity more focused on the next party than on making it to class. If you haven’t seen it in a while, it does hold up rather well and contains one of the funniest film performances courtesy of the late, great John Belushi.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Genre: Drama
Starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blancett and Tilda Swinton
Directed by David Fincher
Written by Eric Roth
Based on a short story from F. Scott Fitzgerald, this 2008 film follows the life story of Benjamin Button. What makes Benjamin’s case so curious is that he is born an old man and ages in reverse. A fine plot propels a moving story which examines life and what each person makes of it.
The Big Short
Genre: Drama, Comedy
Starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling
Directed by Adam McKay
Written by Adam McKay and Charles Randolph
This film won the Oscar last year for it’s clever and inventive screenplay. The film tells the true life tale of a handful of bold and ambitious individuals who, on the brink of the U.S house market collapse, had the foresight to bet against the housing market. Not a tale of heroes, but a well-told story of the smartest people in the room who managed to get off a sinking ship with their wallets full.
The Social Network
Genre: Drama
Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake
Directed by David Fincher
Written by Aaron Sorkin
A movie based on the invention of Facebook may not seem like the most enticing story, but you’d be surprised at what a engaging drama it can be. Based on the true events, the movie follows brilliant outsider Mark Zuckerberg who made a global network for friends to connect and managed to make more than a few enemies in the process.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Genre: Sci-Fi
Starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Harrison Ford
Directed by J.J Abrams
Written by J.J Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan
The Star Wars saga is maybe the most beloved film franchises of all time and now a new saga is attempting to introduce a new generation to these worlds. If you’re a fan of the classic films, you’ll likely be thrilled by how faithful the new film is to the old franchise. Old favorites return, new compelling characters make a strong impression and the action set-pieces are quite thrilling. A great film to enjoy with the whole family.
