Netflix has become an unbelievable source of entertainment for millions of Canadians. For the relatively cheap monthly subscription, users have access to countless films and television shows from various years, various genres and various cinematic tastes.
The only real problem with Netflix is deciding what to watch.

Titanic (1997)

One of the greatest tragedies of the previous century became one of the biggest films of all time. An epic romance film in the fashion of old Hollywood film, all surrounding the maiden of the ill-fated passenger ship. The story at the center involves a unlikely relationship that develops between a mistreated wealthy woman and a free-spirited, impoverished man. Of course the movie really kicks off with the third act sequence in which the sinking of the ship which is an enthralling set piece.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Genre: Action
Directed by George Miller
Starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult
The Mad Max series started in the 1970s as part of the movement of Australian low-budget action film. Few people could have predicted that all these years past, it would produce one of the greatest genre films of all time. The long-awaited sequel replaces the Mel Gibson with Tom Hardy as the silent, nomad hero as he becomes entangled in a dangerous adventure involving a heroine attempting to save a group of imprisoned women. There is little in the way of a story, but that doesn’t stop the film from being wholly engrossing. From start to finish, it’s a heart-pounding epic that will leave you breathless.
Footloose (1984)

Starring Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, John Lithgow
Sometimes it’s great to revisit some of those classics from your youth and see if they hold up the way you remember. It’s hard to say if this music-infused film stands the test of time, but it will no doubt be a fun bit of nostalgic joy. The light little romance follows Kevin Bacon as a new kid moved to a small, religiously-inclined town where dancing has been outlawed. Needless to say, this young rebel doesn’t abide this rule and soon has all the youths in town cutting loose. It’s a silly film for sure, but it’s harmless fun with an incredibly catchy theme song from Kenny Loggins.
Tropic Thunder (2008)
Genre: Comedy, Action
Directed by Ben Stiller
Starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr.
It can be hard to mix genres in films but when it works well it can be quite refreshing. Ben Stiller’s comedy-action film does this very well while also creating some of the most outrageous moments you’re likely to see in a comedy. The film follows the making of a big-budget Vietnam film when the arrogant, pampered movie find themselves in the midst of actual danger. The movie is bolstered by some hilarious characters such as the idiotic action star hoping to become a serious actor, the award-winning thespians who will go to shocking extremes to prepare for his role, and the abrasive studio executive who is played hilariously by an unrecognizable super star actor.
The Light Between Oceans (2016)

Directed by Derek Cianfrance
Starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Rachel Weisz
While a good comedy or light fare is fun to watch, sometimes you’re more in the mood for a bit more drama and heartbreak in your movie watching. This film can certainly deliver that. It follows the story of a young, loving couple who’s relationship survived many hardships but is tested after a horrible tragedy. Just when things seem to be at their worst, their prayers seem to be answered when a small child is brought ashore in a boat near their home. However, years later when the child’s real mother appears, their happiness is once again put at risk. Certainly not a fun watch, but a compelling drama based off a best-selling novel.
