As we continue to look forward at the year in front of us, we now move our attention to the biggest movies coming out in 2018.
Last year ended up being a great year at the movies and there is plenty to be excited about over the next 12 months as well with a great variety of entertainment coming to theatres. There’s the big-budget superhero films, highly anticipated sequels, family friendly adventures and amazing true stories. Let’s take a look at the most exciting movies of 2018.
The 15:17 to Paris
Directed by Clint Eastwood
Starring Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler, and Alek Skarlatos
Clint Eastwood is one of the most celebrated American directors of all time and he seems to have a specialty with patriotic and stirring true stories of war. Here, he takes on another such tale though with a pretty interesting bit of casting involved. This movie tells the story of the 2015 attempted attack aboard a train bound for Paris which was thwarted by three American friends. Though a fictional account of the incident, Eastwood has chosen to cast the three real-life heroes to play themselves in the film despite having no acting experience. It’s a risky move that will be interesting to see if it pays off.
Black Panther
Directed by Ryan Coogler
Starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has continually showed why the superhero genre is still so widely popular, putting out three hit films last year alone (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok). Now they are returning with a fresh approach to the world with Black Panther. The film’s titular hero is the guardian and king of a highly secretive and technologically advanced country in Africa. He struggles to keep the outside world at bay while facing off against foes from within who seek to take the throne. Featuring a largely all-Black cast, this is a film many fans have been waiting a long time for.
A Wrinkle in Time
Directed by Ava DuVernay
Starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling
Based on the much-loved children’s book, this big-budget adaption follows a little girl’s quest through space to find her missing father. This film looks to be one of the biggest family films of the year with an all-star cast, a cherished source material and amazing visuals.
Isle of Dogs
Directed by Wes Anderson
Starring Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray
Wes Anderson is one of the most visually distinct filmmakers around and there is no mistaking one of his films when you see it. And given his extremely impressive string of hits (The Royal Tenenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel), he’s one to get excited about anytime he releases a new film. This odd epic uses the same stop-motion animation he used so effectively for The Fantastic Mister Fox, to tell the story of a future set in Japan where dogs are exiled to their own island and a group of canines who set out to help a young boy reunite with his pet.
Ready Player One
Directed by Steven Spielberg
Starring Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn
Is there a name more synonymous with movie fun than Steven Spielberg? With too many amazing films to name, a new film by his is an automatic must-see. This sci-fi adaption of the cult novel is set in a future where the world escapes into a virtual reality game. The stakes of the game rise considerably when its creator announces any player to find the hidden Easter Egg wins his vast fortune. It’s basically a dystopian version of Willy Wonka.
Avengers: Infinity War
Directed by The Russo Brothers
Starring Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evan, Chris Hemsworth
Marvel returns with what could be its biggest film yet. The culmination of their nearly 20-film run which could mean the end of some of our favourite heroes. In the third Avengers film, the team of superheroes are joined by the Guardians of the Galaxy, along with new heroes like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and Black Panther, to take of an intergalactic mad man known as Thanos who’s looking to bring balance to the universe in a terrifying way. Without a doubt one of the biggest film of the year.
Solo: A Star Wars Movie
Directed by Ron Howard
Starring Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke
The Star Wars universe is going strong and set for another hit with this look at the beginnings of everyone’s favourite smuggler. Telling the early days of Han Solo, this intergalactic gangster tale plans to show how Han met some of his dearest friends like Chewbacca and Lando, as well as how he came to pilot the Millennium Falcon.
Oceans 8
Directed by Gary Ross
Starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchette, Anne Hathaway
Not letting the boys have all the fun, this sequel to the Oceans 11 movies updates it with a female twist. Sandra Bullock stars as a ringleader who bring together a group of lady thieves for one massive heist. With an A-list ensemble of actresses, it’s bound to enterain.
The Incredibles 2
Directed by Brad Bird
Starring Craig T Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L Jackson
The long-awaited sequel to Pixar’s hit superhero family film is finally arriving. Details of the sequel are still unclear but it will continue the charming and exciting adventures of the super-powered Parr clan as they balance saving the world and being a normal family.
The Predator
Directed by Shane Black
Starring Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Trevante Rhodes
The classic extraterrestrial monster returns for more bloody scars this summer. In this sequel, suburban L.A becomes the hunting grounds for a group of Predators and it’s up to a squad of washed-up military soldiers to fight them off. With the hilarious and talented Shane Black writing and directing the film, it’s bound to be an action-packed adventure with more than a few laughs.
First Man

Starring Ryan Gosling, Corey Stoll, Kyle Chandler
La La Land was a major hit just two years ago and now that film’s director is returning to the big screen with a story of one of the world’s most recognizable names, Neil Armstrong. This ambitious tale will take audiences with Armstrong on that historical trip to the moon to take man’s first steps.
Halloween

Starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Will Patton
Just in time for … well, Halloween, the highly influential horror franchise returns to frighten more baby sitters. Set decades after the events of the first one, Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the role that made her famous to faceoff once again with the masked killer, Michael Myers.
The Irishman

A gangster film directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. Enough said.
Mary Poppins Returns
Directed by Rob Marshall
Starring Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep
The world’s most beloved nanny returns for a brand-new story. The lovely and talented Emily Blunt takes over the titular role for this musical family film set years after the original. In this sequel, little Jane and Michael Banks are now adults and met with a personal tragedy when they are visited by their childhood nanny, Mary Poppins.
