Genre: Sci-Fi
Directed by Duncan Jones
Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga
A good genre-mashing film can be difficult to make, but this one delivers a thrilling and very entertaining mix of the mystery film and a complex science fiction film. This high concept pop corn film starts with a man waking up on a train with no memory only to have the train explode moments later. It is slowly revealed that this man is in fact a solider whose mind is being transplanted into the body of this train passenger in order to solve mystery of who planted the bomb on the train. It’s a twisting, turning actioner that’s plenty of fun.
Super Size Me
Genre: Documentary
Directed by Morgan Spurlock
Despite many examples to the contrary, documentaries have a stigma of being a bit dull and dealing with heavy subjects. However, this film is probably one of the most fun, most entertaining documentaries you are likely to see, dealing with the fast food nation in the States. Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock sets out to give a real depiction of what this type of food does to your body by consuming nothing but MacDonalds for 30 days. It’s a compelling, sometimes disgusting film that might make you second guess hitting the drive-thru.
The Fighter
Genre: Drama, Sports
Directed by David O. Russell
Starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams
There are plenty of amazing boxing movies throughout the history of cinema, from Raging Bull to Rocky, and someday The Fighter may be placed among those classics. Telling the true story of Boston-born boxer Mickey Ward who built himself up from a poor, downtrodden amateur to a legitimate contender. The film is also a really interesting look at an unusual family, especially Ward’s older brother who was once a promising boxer in his own right but then fell into a drug-addled spiral.
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Genre: Comedy
Directed by Wes Anderson
Starring Ralph Fiennes, F. Murray Abraham, Tony Revolori
It’s a bit difficult to explain the appeal to this film since it’s one of the more unique films you have even seen. From the very visionary mind and eye of Wes Anderson, this is a time-leaping tale of one of the most prestigious hotels in Eastern Europe and the strange characters who inhabit it. It unexpectedly becomes a complicated and rather intense murder mystery that is both hilarious and surprisingly touching when the whole journey is done.
