There are a handful of topics that just seem to be off-limits in comedy, and cancer certainly falls into that category. For that, you really have to admire this film’s bravery as it tackles the intense subject with a unique and refreshing sense of humor. That’s not to say the film laughs at cancer, but instead presents a truthful look at a young man battling a very serious illness, and believe it or not, it can be funny at times.

Gangs of New York (2002)

Genre: Historical

Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, Cameron Diaz

Written by Jay Cocks

There are few filmmaker that have such a strong connection with a city as Martin Scorsese has with New York. This may be his darkest look at one of the world’s greatest cities as it delves into one of the darker times in New York’s history. The film is set up as a revenge tale about a young Irish immigrant out to kill the man who killed his father, but it tells the bigger tale of a country on the brink of civil war and a city ready to tear itself apart. The scope is massive and the violence is hard to watch, but it also gives us one of the greatest movie villain, Bill the Butcher. Given recent events in America, the film’s themes dealing of aspects like racism, immigration and the dark side of patriotism, it could be an awfully topical picture.

The film follows a young man working for a crime syndicate in the near future, tasked with the job of killing target who are sent back in time from the future. Hollywood is not lacking in their sports stories, but a film about the world of Formula 1 racing is certainly a rarity. For that reason, you may not have heard this story of rival racers, James Hunt and Niki Lauda. The two men battled for years for the top spot in the sport until a unexpected event changed their relationship forever. For those who don’t know the story, it’s an engrossing drama with some shocking moments, and for those familiar you can still enjoy the solid performances and epic race sequences.

The King’s Speech (2010)

Genre: Historical, Biographical

Cast: Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter

Directed by Tom Hooper

Written by Peter Morgan

Obviously there’s plenty of huge moments in history to be mind for the big screen treatment, but there are also those smaller, little-known moments in history in which you can find a surprising amount of drama. This film tells the story of King George VI who suffered a terrible stutter and the man who helped him overcome it. A film filled with fantastic performances and an inspirational true story. Perfect for the whole family.
