October 29, 2018

Working from home might seem like a dream come true, but you need to be sure it’s the right move for you.

As we’ve looked at throughout this month, there are a lot a great reasons to work from home. It’s becoming a very significant desire for many professionals and employers might even be starting to see the benefits. However, as perfect as it might seem now, it’s not for everyone. I can say for myself, that working from home is a pretty ideal situation, but I also know that there are aspects to it that do not suit some professionals. Before you get too carried away with your dreams of setting up a home office, ask yourself these questions to ensure it’s the right step for you.

Can you remain productive?

Working from home can be very productive, but it depends on your personality. Do you get more done in a creative, collaborative environment? Are you the type of person that closes your office door or puts on headphones to stay productive? Think of how you thrive in your work and determine if the home office can provide that for you.

Where will you work?

The freedom of working remotely means you are able to work from a café or library from time to time. However, it’s also essential to have a solid workspace available whenever needed. It doesn’t need to be big, so there’s no need to rent out a new space. But if you don’t have somewhere you can be comfortable and productive day in and day out, you might have to rethink this move.

What will your schedule be?

Working from home allows you to escape the 9-to-5, but in order to remain effective, you’ll need a work schedule. If you try to only work when you’re feeling productive it will be a disaster for both your work life and your personal life. Be sure you can map out enough time in the day where you are accomplishing what needs to be done without it spilling over into your home life.

How will it affect your household?

As with most big decisions, it’s a good idea to bring your loved ones into the fold. You might be ready to work from home but consider how it affects your spouse, kids or anyone else in the home. Will they be able to go about their routines with you working at home? Discuss the decision openly so everyone is on the same page.

Can you reliably stay in touch?

Communication is a big part of any successful organization. When you’re working from home it becomes even more important. Without regular face-to-face time, you need to be available for your colleagues when needed. Responding quickly to emails, returning calls and being there for update meetings is very important.

Does it offer you the freedom you want?

Most people look at working from home as the ultimate freedom at work. But it’s important to consider just how important that kind of freedom is to you. I can personally say that having no commute, my own space and a flexible schedule are ideal for me. But are you willing to give up a more active day, workplace friendships and collaborations? Figure out what’s most important for you before making any rash decisions.

Can I be independent in my work?

Again, while collaboration is still possible while working remotely, you need to be able to handle working on your own. Some people thrive in such situations. Others struggle with it and work better in a team environment. Be sure you can handle little oversight and still gets things done effectively.
