5 Tips To Bounce Back After Surgery

November 3, 2016

Undergoing surgery can be a scary thing no matter how serious the procedure might be. Of course, above you can be thankful when the surgery goes well and you are healthy, but then comes the recovery process. This can be a very trying time as, depending on the extent of your surgery, you can be left in a weak or even pained state. While it might not be easy, there are ways you can ensure that you recover as quickly and safely as possible to get you back on your feet.

Listen to your doctor.

This is the number one tip for a reason. It is the most important bit of advice we can give you and you would be wise to heed this advice absolutely. Your doctor knows what is best for your recovery and how you should go about it. do not blindly follow any other advice (including ours) if it contradicts what you doctor has told you. In fact, consult your doctor before making any major choices concerning your recovery. Now with that important reminder out of the way, let’s move on.

Do the appropriate exercises.

Depending on what your surgery entails, your doctor would likely give you a list of exercises that will help with the recovery process. These exercises are specifically designed to help benefit your specific condition and should be followed exactly as specified. Do not substitute an exercise you think is better suited to you. Do not skip out on your exercises because they’re too hard. If you feel pain or discomfort because of the exercises consult your doctor.

Eat well.

When you’re bedridden or off your feet for an extended period, it’s easy to fall into a lazy, unhealthy habit. Part of this can come down to your diet. Its much easier to order a pizza or have a bag of chips than to have a nutritious meal. Keep eating your veggies and get your protein that will help get your strong and give you the energy you need to get yourself better.

Get some rest.

This recovery period can put you out of commission for longer than you might like and some people aren’t comfortable with such a long period of inactivity. Regardless of how it may make you feel, rest is very important. A good sleep is extremely beneficial for healing and getting your strength back and always being on the move won’t do you any favours. Which brings us to our final tip.

Don’t push yourself.

You need to give yourself the appropriate amount of time to allow yourself to recover. I’m sure you want to get back on your feet as quickly as possible, but simply wanting to be better isn’t going to do it. when you push yourself before you are ready, you are actually setting your recovery back. Slow things down and take it easy while you get back into good health. Once you’re at 100 percent, then you can take on the world once more.
