Netflix has become an unbelievable source of entertainment for millions of Canadians. For the relatively cheap monthly subscription, users have access to countless films and television shows from various years, various genres and various cinematic tastes.

Good Will Hunting

This 1997 drama is mostly know as that movie Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote, but it often gets overlooked as being just an all-around solid film. The story follows a troubled young man named Will Hunting (Matt Damon) who is living a meandering life before being discovered as a mathematical genius. Filled with amazing performances, especially from Robin Williams as a psychiatrist assigned to help Will, the film does a wonderful job of exploring such topics as loss, guilt, friendship and choices.
The Martian
Genre: Sci-Fi, Drama
Starring Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels

Another appearance from Matt Damon, this one a little more recent. The Martian came out last year to bog box office number and critical acclaim, including a number of Oscar nominations. The plot deals with a maned mission to Mars that goes awry and results in a lone astronaut (Damon) being stranded on the Red Planet with only his wits to save him. Despite being directed by Alien director, Ridley Scott, this film is a truly uplifting tale about how knowledge and determination can overcome a lot.
Trumbo
Genre: Biography, Drama, Comedy
Starring Bryan Cranston, Diane Lane, Helen Mirren

It’s always interesting to see films delve into the less-than-flattering aspects of Hollywood history. This particular film deals with the 1940s Communist witch-hunt that led to many prominent screenwriter being blacklisted by all major studios. The films tells to true story of Dalton Trumbo, one such writer who took unconventional means to keep working and eventually win an Oscar as a blacklisted writer. It’s a remarkable story and it’s quite interesting to see Hollywood legend John Wayne portrayed as an outright villain.
He Named Me Malala

The story of young Pakistani girl Malala Yousafzai is one of the most extraordinary you’ll ever hear. This documentary chronicles her life as a women’s rights activist before her assassination attempt and he courageous determination to continue spreading the word in the aftermath. An inspiring tale for all.
The Good Dinosaur

If you’re looking for family entertainment, you could hardly do better than a Pixar movie. Their latest animation masterpiece follows the unlikely friendship of a timid and lonely dinosaur and a wild human boy as they journey through the prehistoric lands in search for home.
